Another edition of English Winter Camp is behind us.

The next edition of the English Winter Camp organized by the PMI Poland branch Gdańsk is behind us. Educational classes entitled: “Threats to the environment and man from waste electrical and electronic equipment” took place on the 5th of February 2024 at High School No. 1 in Pruszcz Gdański. The event was attended by children in difficult financial situations. Children’s age was 8 to 14 years old. A total of 27 participants took part in the English Winter Camp 2024.

The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness of the threats resulting from improper handling of waste electrical and electronic equipment, to promote selective collection of electronic waste, and to develop a pro-ecological attitudes among young recipients. The ECO workshop was conducted by the leader of the Gdańsk Branch of PMI, Mrs. Agnieszka Kaczmarek-Kacprzak – an electrical engineer and a long-time lecturer at  the Gdańsk University of Technology.

The workshops were divided into 3 parts:

The first part focused on raising awareness among participants about the dangers associated with improper disposal of electronic waste:

•            In this part, we defined e-waste – what it is;

•            We discussed why e-waste is harmful;

•            We discussed what to do with e-waste;

•            We discussed what happens to electrical and electronic equipment after it is used up – e-waste recycling.

While discussing the above issues, children shared their knowledge. The workshop leader supplemented their statements and added interesting facts. The knowledge gained during the first part of the workshops was used in the subsequent exercises.

The second part was a game in which kids, divided into pairs, searched for questions/tasks based on the first part of the workshop. The participants had to write down the answered riddles in the crossword puzzle. Teams could help each other. The aim of the exercise was cooperation through play to reinforce the issues related to proper use of electrical and electronic equipment and disposal of e-waste in the most child-friendly way possible.

The third part of the workshop was to complete an artistic task, based on the guessed word in the crossword. Children created ECO-scarves with their own message.

See you at English Summer Camp!
