English Summer Camp 2024

Date: 26/08/2024

From 19 to 23 August 2024, the English Summer Camp organised by PMI Poland Gdańsk Branch once again took place at General Secondary School No. 1 in Pruszcz Gdański. As usual, the project included educational workshops titled “Threats to the Environment and Humans from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment”. The workshops were attended by 22 children aged 8 to 14 from families in challenging life circumstances.

The aim of the classes was to raise awareness of the risks that improper management of electronic waste poses to human health and the natural environment, with particular emphasis on its harmful impact on the aquatic ecosystem. The theme of this year’s ESC edition was water. The ECO workshop was conducted by the leader of the Gdańsk Branch of PMI, Ms Agnieszka Kaczmarek-Kacprzak – an electrical engineer and a long-time lecturer at the Gdańsk University of Technology

The first part was aimed at building awareness among participants about the risks associated with improper disposal of electronic waste:

• the concept of electronic waste was defined;

• its harmful effects were explained;

• guidance was given on how to handle it;

• the participants also learned about the recycling process and what happens to electrical and electronic equipment once it is no longer in use.

After the theoretical part, participants searched for hidden facts regarding the topic of the workshop around the room and discussed them together. The workshop leader supplemented children’s findings with additional insights and interesting facts about electronic waste.

 In the second part of the workshop, children applied their knowledge in a game. Divided into two-person teams, they searched for questions and tasks based on the earlier theoretical section, recording their answers in a crossword puzzle. The teams were encouraged to help each other, as the goal of the exercise was to foster cooperation through play, reinforcing in a child-friendly way the importance of proper handling of waste electrical and electronic equipment.

We look forward to meeting again at the English Winter Camp 2025!
